Water is the most important part of your hot tub, so you'll need to regularly treat it to keep it clean and healthy. The products below will help you keep your hot tub or spa clean, pH balanced, and algae-free!
Keep Your Hot Tub Water Clean
Your water is one of the most important parts of your hot tub – it’s the thing that makes relaxing in the spa so relaxing, after all! If there’s a problem with your spa, chances are that it’ll manifest itself in your water. You can avoid many of the most common hot tub problems simply by keeping your hot tub water clean and healthy.
Hot tubs, spas, or swimming pools – they all need healthy, hygienic water! Keep reading for a quick guide to the water treatments you’ll need. For more information, click on the products above.
Algaecide
Algae grows on pools. Chlorine or bromine can both be used to control algae growth, but it can’t keep your water healthy all on its own! Sometimes, it needs the help of a special algaecide to work effectively. This is because chlorine and bromine are sort of all-purpose sanitisers. They fight off bacteria as well as algae, and if there’s a lot of bacteria in the water, they might not be strong enough to prevent algae as well. Regular algaecidal treatment keeps your spa or pool clean and hygienic all year round.
Spa Clarifier
A lot of dirt ends up in your hot tub water. This dirt can consist of skin flakes, skin oils, hair, cosmetics, deodorant, dirt from the outside, and more. Most of this will get picked up by your filter, but some small dirt particles may be too small for it. These smaller particles can make your water cloudy and unhygienic – unless, that is, you use some spa clarifier. This special liquid causes tiny particles of dirt to cling together, forming larger lumps that can be picked up by your filter. As long as you remember to regularly clean your filter, you’ll find it much easier to keep clean, healthy water.
Anti-Foam
If your water is dirty, unbalanced, or full of people covered in fake tan and make-up, you might end up with some foam in your hot tub. Your hot tub should be bubbly without being foamy – if you end up with a thick, clingy white foam on top of your water, something is wrong. Luckily, you can fix this annoying problem with a small dose of anti-foam! This fluid neutralises the agents in your water that causes the foam, so it melts away before your eyes. It’s important to point out that foam is usually a symptom of an underlying problem which might need further investigation.
pH Adjusters
Hot tub maintenance needs a bit of chemistry knowledge. The main things you need to know are pH numbers and what they mean. pH is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline something is on a scale of 0 to 14, with lower numbers being acidic and higher ones being alkaline. 7 is neutral. You want your hot tub water to be slightly above neutral – between 7.4 and 7.6 is best. You can add pH adjusters to move your pH level up or down as required. This is important – too low or too high and your water can start to corrode parts of your hot tub! If it’s really wrong, it can cause dry, flaky skin and eye irritation, so you do need to carefully manage it.
