Anti Foams
Hot tub foam can quickly ruin a relaxing spa session. It seems to come out of nowhere and without warning, so it's good to have a bottle of anti-foam solution on hand! Get the best-value anti-foam on the market below, suitable for home users and hot tub cleaning professionals alike.
Causes of Hot Tub Foam
Hot tub foam is caused by molecules called surfactants. Surfactants are special molecules that cause bubbles – to find out more about them, check out our detailed guide to getting rid of hot tub foam here. There are a lot of things that act as surfactants – particles of hair products, make-up, fake tan, deodorants and other cosmetic products are the main culprits. However, the oils from your skin and hair and traces of soap powder in your swimming costume can also play a part.
Usually, your filter can pick up most of these particles (you can use a spa clarifier to help your filter clean them out). In some cases, though, your filter might not do this too well, which causes a lot of surfactants to build up inside your hot tub water. It could be that your filter is clogged up and in need of cleaning or replacement.
Geography Matters
If you live in a hard water area, you’re more likely to have issues with hot tub foam. This is because of all the extra minerals that’ll naturally occur in your water.
How to Prevent Hot Tub Foam
Keeping your water healthy and clean is a good way to prevent serious foam issues. However, a lot of foam can still appear when you first step into the hot tub, especially if you haven’t showered immediately before. To quickly dissolve this foam, use an Anti-Foam solution. These amazing chemicals instantly neutralise surfactants in the water, stopping them from causing that annoying foam.
Underlying Problems
It’s important to remember that hot tub foam is usually the symptom of a deeper problem rather than the problem itself. Anti-Foam will temporarily fix the problem, but it only lasts for around 24 hours. Clingy foam likely means your water is dirty and in need of changing or that your hot tub filter isn’t working properly. Clean your hot tub’s filter out with some filter cleaner. If this doesn’t help, you may need to replace your filter cartridge.
Problems Caused by Foam
Hot tub foam is more than just annoying – it can cause some real problems with your hot tub. As it clings to the surface of the tub, it can dry out quickly and cause severe water marks. It also presents a serious slip hazard if you have some sort of decking around the tub. This means it’s a good idea to get it all treated as soon as it starts to appear – don’t let your spa session turn into a foam party!
